The Law: Barrier or Gate  Rom. 8:1-4

What did Jesus mean when He said:  It is finished?

Supplemental Scriptures

Rom 3:21   23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God  NIV

James 2:9  10 For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it.  NIV

Rom 6:23   23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.  NIV

Heb 4:15-16   15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are — yet was without sin.  NIV

Matt 5:17-18  17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.  NIV

John 10:7   7 Therefore Jesus said again, “I tell you the truth, I am the gate for the sheep.  NIV

Rom 7:4  4 So, my brothers, you also died to the law through the body of Christ, that you might belong to another, to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit to God.  NIV

Gal 5:22-23   22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.  NIV

The Triumphal Entry  Matt. 21;1-9, 15-16

We delve into the importance of Christ’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem.

Supplemental Scriptures

Zech 9:   9  Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion!
Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem!
See, your king comes to you,
righteous and having salvation,
gentle and riding on a donkey,
on a colt, the foal of a donkey.  NIV

Dan 9:25-26   25 “Know and understand this: From the issuing of the decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until the Anointed One, the ruler, comes, there will be seven ‘sevens,’ and sixty-two ‘sevens.’ It will be rebuilt with streets and a trench, but in times of trouble. 26 After the sixty-two ‘sevens,’ the Anointed One will be cut off and will have nothing. The people of the ruler who will come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end will come like a flood: War will continue until the end, and desolations have been decreed.  NIV

Neh 2:7-9   7  I also said to him, “If it pleases the king, may I have letters to the governors of Trans-Euphrates, so that they will provide me safe-conduct until I arrive in Judah? 8 And may I have a letter to Asaph, keeper of the king’s forest, so he will give me timber to make beams for the gates of the citadel by the temple and for the city wall and for the residence I will occupy?” And because the gracious hand of my God was upon me, the king granted my requests. 9 So I went to the governors of Trans-Euphrates and gave them the king’s letters. The king had also sent army officers and cavalry with me.  NIV

Journey to the Cross

We are sorry that we haven’t been able to update the blog with new sermons since Feb. 25th.  We have had problems with malware in the blog that locked us out.  Then we have been having ongoing problems with recording the sermon.  We believe we have these issues resolved, for now.

We are currently having our website and blog completely rewritten to hopefully solve all of these issues permanently.  I will send out a blog post when the new website is ready to go online.  With the new website the blog will be an integral part of the website.

Journey to the Cross  John 1:40-11:53

We are going to take the next three sermons to look at the significance of the events that led to the cross.

Supplemental Scriptures

Heb 12:2   2 Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Mal 4:5    5 “See, I will send you the prophet Elijah before that great and dreadful day of the Lord comes.  NIV

Matt 11:14   14 And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come.  NIV

Matt 17:11-13   11 Jesus replied, “To be sure, Elijah comes and will restore all things. 12 But I tell you, Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but have done to him everything they wished. In the same way the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands.” NIV

Luke 1:16-17   16 Many of the people of Israel will he bring back to the Lord their God. 17 And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous — to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”  NIV

Heb 12:2-4    2 Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.  4 In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.  NIV

Redeemed  Gal 3:15-18

Paul reveals Abraham was given the covenant of righteousness through faith long before the Law existed.  Therefore the covenant of faith predates the covenant of the Law.

Supplemental Scriptures

Gen 6:17-18   17 I am going to bring floodwaters on the earth to destroy all life under the heavens, every creature that has the breath of life in it. Everything on earth will perish. 18 But I will establish my covenant with you, and you will enter the ark — you and your sons and your wife and your sons’ wives with you. NIV

Gen 9:11   11 I establish my covenant with you: Never again will all life be cut off by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth.” NIV

Gen 12:3   3 I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.”  NIV

Gal 3:14   14 He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.  NIV

Heb 11:13  13 All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance. And they admitted that they were aliens and strangers on earth.  NIV

Heb 9:15   15 For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance — now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant.  NIV

Don’t Be a Fool Gal 3:1-5

Paul calls the Galatians foolish.  In this context it means they are too lazy to search and know the Scriptures.  This is what has caused them to be fooled by false teaching.

Supplemental Scriptures

Eph 4:22-24   22 You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; 23 to be made new in the attitude of your minds; 24 and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.  NIV

Heb 7:18-19   18 The former regulation is set aside because it was weak and useless 19 (for the law made nothing perfect), and a better hope is introduced, by which we draw near to God. NIV

Heb 9:15   15 For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance — now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant. NIV

Jer 31:31-33   31 “The time is coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah. 32 It will not be like the covenant I made with their forefathers when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they broke my covenant, though I was a husband to them,” declares the Lord. 33 “This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after that time,” declares the Lord.” I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.  NIV

The video should be available by Friday, 2/1/2019:  Sermon Video

Set Apart  Gal 2:20-21

This passage gives us the clearest understanding of the mechanism of salvation.  It then explains how we are to live after we are born again.

Supplemental Scriptures

Rom 6:6-7    6 For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin— 7 because anyone who has died has been freed from sin. NIV

Gal 6:14   14 May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.  NIV

Gal 1:15-16   15 But when God, who set me apart from birth and called me by his grace, was pleased 16 to reveal his Son in me so that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I did not consult any man,  NIV

Col 3:9-10   9 Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.  NIV

Eph 2:4-5   4 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions — it is by grace you have been saved.  NIV

Living for God

Listen to Sermon

This sermon was recorded on 1/20/2019

The video should be available by Friday, 1/25/2019:  Sermon Video

Set Apart  Gal 2:11-19

Paul uses irrefutable logic to admonish Peter and rebuff the Judaizers and reveals the only way to live for God is through Christ.

Supplemental Scriptures

Mark 7:18-19   18 “Are you so dull?” he asked. “Don’t you see that nothing that enters a man from the outside can make him ‘unclean’? 19 For it doesn’t go into his heart but into his stomach, and then out of his body.” (In saying this, Jesus declared all foods “clean.”)  NIV

John 17:20-21   20 “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, 21 that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.  NIV

Rom 7:4-6   4 So, my brothers, you also died to the law through the body of Christ, that you might belong to another, to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit to God. 5 For when we were controlled by the sinful nature, the sinful passions aroused by the law were at work in our bodies, so that we bore fruit for death. 6 But now, by dying to what once bound us (sinful nature), we have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code.  NIV

Gal 5:24-25   24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.  NIV

Set Apart  Gal 2:11-14

Paul confronts Peter about his hypocrisy.

Supplemental Scriptures

Eph 2:14-16   14 For he himself is our peace, who has made the two one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, 15 by abolishing in his flesh the law with its commandments and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new man out of the two, thus making peace, 16 and in this one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility.
NIV

Acts 10:28   28 He said to them: “You are well aware that it is against our law for a Jew to associate with a Gentile or visit him. But God has shown me that I should not call any man impure or unclean.  NIV

1 Cor 8:10-13   10 For if anyone with a weak conscience sees you who have this knowledge eating in an idol’s temple, won’t he be emboldened to eat what has been sacrificed to idols? 11 So this weak brother, for whom Christ died, is destroyed by your knowledge. 12 When you sin against your brothers in this way and wound their weak conscience, you sin against Christ. 13 Therefore, if what I eat causes my brother to fall into sin, I will never eat meat again, so that I will not cause him to fall. Set Apart  Gal 1:13-17

Paul reveals his history and through it God’s plan for his life.  He reveals that he was set aside at birth to be born again and to be the evangelist to the Gentiles.

Supplemental Scriptures

Acts 9:1-2    1 Meanwhile, Saul was still breathing out murderous threats against the Lord’s disciples. He went to the high priest 2 and asked him for letters to the synagogues in Damascus, so that if he found any there who belonged to the Way, whether men or women, he might take them as prisoners to Jerusalem.  NIV

Acts 9:15-16   15 But the Lord said to Ananias, “Go! This man is my chosen instrument to carry my name before the Gentiles and their kings and before the people of Israel. 16 I will show him how much he must suffer for my name.  NIV

Phil 3:5-6    5 circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; in regard to the law, a Pharisee; 6 as for zeal, persecuting the church; as for legalistic righteousness, faultless.   NIV

James 1:2-4    Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. 4 Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.  NIV

We must make sure we know the origin of any teaching.  It must trace back to a literal understanding of God’s Word.  Any other origin is to be discarded as false teaching.
