My name is Ken Nickell and I am the pastor of Crestview Community Church in Sedona AZ. I am a literal Bible believer which means that if God is truly God then He controls all things. This means that He wrote exactly what He wanted in the Bible using the exact words (in the original language) with an exact meaning and even in an exact order. Therefore unless there is compelling evidence in the context I take every Bible passage literally. There are passages that are parable, illustrations and metaphors but even then they are used to explain a true and literal command, precept or principle. I come from a technical background. I started out my career as an electronics technician, then I worked in the mining industry maintaining all the control systems that turn ore into copper. From there I went to work for a major defense contractor as a robotics and control system designer. Then at 35 years of age God called me into the ministry. This technical background gives me a slightly different perspective on preaching and teaching. I tend to use a lot of science, logic and history to show that the Bible is absolutely true and that there is overwhelming evidence in science, history, archaeology and logic to support my belief.

Don’t Be a Fool Gal 3:1-5

Paul calls the Galatians foolish.  In this context it means they are too lazy to search and know the Scriptures.  This is what has caused them to be fooled by false teaching.

Supplemental Scriptures

Eph 4:22-24   22 You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; 23 to be made new in the attitude of your minds; 24 and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.  NIV

Heb 7:18-19   18 The former regulation is set aside because it was weak and useless 19 (for the law made nothing perfect), and a better hope is introduced, by which we draw near to God. NIV

Heb 9:15   15 For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance — now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant. NIV

Jer 31:31-33   31 “The time is coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah. 32 It will not be like the covenant I made with their forefathers when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they broke my covenant, though I was a husband to them,” declares the Lord. 33 “This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after that time,” declares the Lord.” I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.  NIV

Set Apart  Gal 2:20-21

This passage gives us the clearest understanding of the mechanism of salvation.  It then explains how we are to live after we are born again.

Supplemental Scriptures

Rom 6:6-7    6 For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin— 7 because anyone who has died has been freed from sin. NIV

Gal 6:14   14 May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.  NIV

Gal 1:15-16   15 But when God, who set me apart from birth and called me by his grace, was pleased 16 to reveal his Son in me so that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I did not consult any man,  NIV

Col 3:9-10   9 Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.  NIV

Eph 2:4-5   4 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions — it is by grace you have been saved.  NIV

Living for God

Listen to Sermon

This sermon was recorded on 1/20/2019

The video should be available by Friday, 1/25/2019:  Sermon Video

Set Apart  Gal 2:11-19

Paul uses irrefutable logic to admonish Peter and rebuff the Judaizers and reveals the only way to live for God is through Christ.

Supplemental Scriptures

Mark 7:18-19   18 “Are you so dull?” he asked. “Don’t you see that nothing that enters a man from the outside can make him ‘unclean’? 19 For it doesn’t go into his heart but into his stomach, and then out of his body.” (In saying this, Jesus declared all foods “clean.”)  NIV

John 17:20-21   20 “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, 21 that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.  NIV

Rom 7:4-6   4 So, my brothers, you also died to the law through the body of Christ, that you might belong to another, to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit to God. 5 For when we were controlled by the sinful nature, the sinful passions aroused by the law were at work in our bodies, so that we bore fruit for death. 6 But now, by dying to what once bound us (sinful nature), we have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code.  NIV

Gal 5:24-25   24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.  NIV

Set Apart  Gal 2:11-14

Paul confronts Peter about his hypocrisy.

Supplemental Scriptures

Eph 2:14-16   14 For he himself is our peace, who has made the two one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, 15 by abolishing in his flesh the law with its commandments and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new man out of the two, thus making peace, 16 and in this one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility.
NIV

Acts 10:28   28 He said to them: “You are well aware that it is against our law for a Jew to associate with a Gentile or visit him. But God has shown me that I should not call any man impure or unclean.  NIV

1 Cor 8:10-13   10 For if anyone with a weak conscience sees you who have this knowledge eating in an idol’s temple, won’t he be emboldened to eat what has been sacrificed to idols? 11 So this weak brother, for whom Christ died, is destroyed by your knowledge. 12 When you sin against your brothers in this way and wound their weak conscience, you sin against Christ. 13 Therefore, if what I eat causes my brother to fall into sin, I will never eat meat again, so that I will not cause him to fall. Supplemental Scriptures

Acts 9:1-2    1 Meanwhile, Saul was still breathing out murderous threats against the Lord’s disciples. Acts 9:15-16   15 But the Lord said to Ananias, “Go! This man is my chosen instrument to carry my name before the Gentiles and their kings and before the people of Israel. 16 I will show him how much he must suffer for my name.  NIV

Phil 3:5-6    5 circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; in regard to the law, a Pharisee; 6 as for zeal, persecuting the church; as for legalistic righteousness, faultless.   NIV

James 1:2-4    Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. 4 Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.  NIV

Know the Origin  Gal 1:11-17

We must make sure we know the origin of any teaching.  It must trace back to a literal understanding of God’s Word.  Any other origin is to be discarded as false teaching.

Heresy  Gal 1

Introduction to our study of the book of Galatians.

Supplemental Scriptures

Eph 2:8-9   8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith — and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast.  NIV

Matt 18:19-20  19 “Again, I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. 20 For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them.”  NIV

Matt 18:15-20  15 “If your brother sins against you, go and show him his fault, just between the two of you. If he listens to you, you have won your brother over. 16 But if he will not listen, take one or two others along, so that ‘every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.’  17 If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, treat him as you would a pagan or a tax collector. “18 I tell you the truth, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.19 “Again, I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. 20 For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them.” NIV

2 Cor 11:13-15   13 For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, masquerading as apostles of Christ. 14 And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. 15 It is not surprising, then, if his servants masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve.  NIV
