Love is Eternal Cor. 14:13-19

Paul continues with his discussion of tongues by proving how prophecy is more edifying and beneficial to the church than tongues.  Tongues edifies the individual whereas prophecy edifies the entire body.

Supplemental Scriptures

Gen 2:7    7 the Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being. NIV

Rom 8:6     16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. NIV

Psalm 146:3-4     3 Do not put your trust in princes, in mortal men, who cannot save. 4 When their spirit departs, they return to the ground; on that very day their plans come to nothing. NIV

John 4:23-24    23 Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth.” NIV

1 Samuel 15:22   22 But Samuel replied:
Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the voice of the Lord?  To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams.  NIV

2 John 6   6 And this is love:  that we walk in obedience to His commands.  As you have heard from the beginning,  His command is that you walk in love.  NIV

Love is Eternal Cor. 14:1-12

Chapter 14 discusses the merits of two spiritual gifts: tongues and prophecy because the Corinthians were enamored with the gift of tongues.

Supplemental Scriptures

1 Cor 12:11    11  All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines.  NIV

Acts 2:4, 11      4  All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.  11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism);  Cretans and Arabs – we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!”  NIV

Acts 10:44-46  44  While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message.  45  The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles.  46  For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God.   NIV

1 Corinthians 14:22     22  Tongues, then, are a sign, not for believers but for unbelievers; prophecy, however, is for believers, not for unbelievers.   NIV

Romans 11:13-14    13   I am talking to you Gentiles.  Inasmuch as I am the apostle to the Gentiles, I make  much of my ministry 14 in the hope that I may somehow arouse my own people to envy and save some of them.   NIV

John 17:14   14  I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world.  NIV
