Paul reveals three attitudes that definitely are not keeping in step with the Spirit

Supplemental Scriptures

Matt 23:15  15 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to win a single convert, and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of hell as you are. NIV

Titus 3:9-11   9 But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and arguments and quarrels about the law, because these are unprofitable and useless. 10 Warn a divisive person once, and then warn him a second time. After that, have nothing to do with him. 11 You may be sure that such a man is warped and sinful; he is self-condemned.  NIV

Phil 2:1-4    2 So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, 2 complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. 3 Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. 4 Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.  ESV

Crucifixion

Click on the player start arrow (below) to start playback

We delve into the complex and difficult issue of our own crucifixion.

Supplemental Scriptures

Rom 6:1-4   1 What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? 2 By no means! We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? 3 Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. NIV

Rom. 8:10-11  10 But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness. 11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you. NIV

Gal 2:20  20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.  NIV

Rom 2:29  29 No, a man is a Jew if he is one inwardly; and circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code. Such a man’s praise is not from men, but from God.  NIV

Rom 6:6-7   6 We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. 7 For one who has died has been set free from sin.  ESV

Col 1:10-12  10 And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, 11 being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully 12 giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light.  NIV

Mark 12:30-31   30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’  31 The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.”  NIV

James 1:2-4    2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. 4 Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.  NIV

Phil 4:6-7   6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.  NIV

Luke 10:33-34  33 But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, took him to an inn and took care of him.  NIV

Gen 1:12  12 The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.  NIV

Rev 13:10 10 If anyone is to go into captivity, into captivity he will go. If anyone is to be killed with the sword, with the sword he will be killed. This calls for patient endurance and faithfulness on the part of the saints. NIV

1 Peter 3:15  15 But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, NIV

Prov 25:28 28 Like a city whose walls are broken down is a man who lacks self-control.  NIV

Freedom  Gal. 5:19-21

Paul lists some of the sins that come from our sin nature.  Some of these sins made their way into the Galatian church and we need to be aware they can make their way into our churches as well.

Supplemental Scriptures

Mark 7:20-23   20 He went on: “What comes out of a man is what makes him ‘unclean.’ 21 For from within, out of men’s hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, 22 greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. 23 All these evils come from inside and make a man ‘unclean.'”  NIV

2 Cor 12:20   20 For I am afraid that when I come I may not find you as I want you to be, and you may not find me as you want me to be. I fear that there may be quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, factions, slander, gossip, arrogance and disorder.  NIV

1 Cor 11:19   19 No doubt there have to be differences among you to show which of you have God’s approval.  NIV

Eph 4:2-6   2 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. 3 Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit— just as you were called to one hope when you were called— 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. The Law: Barrier or Gate  Rom. 8:1-4

What did Jesus mean when He said:  It is finished?

Supplemental Scriptures

Rom 3:21   23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God  NIV

James 2:9  10 For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it.  NIV

Rom 6:23   23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.  NIV

Heb 4:15-16   15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are — yet was without sin.  NIV

Matt 5:17-18  17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.  NIV

John 10:7   7 Therefore Jesus said again, “I tell you the truth, I am the gate for the sheep.  NIV

The Triumphal Entry  Matt. 21;1-9, 15-16

We delve into the importance of Christ’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem.

Supplemental Scriptures

Zech 9:   9  Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion!
Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem!
See, your king comes to you,
righteous and having salvation,
gentle and riding on a donkey,
on a colt, the foal of a donkey.  NIV

Dan 9:25-26   25 “Know and understand this: From the issuing of the decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until the Anointed One, the ruler, comes, there will be seven ‘sevens,’ and sixty-two ‘sevens.’ It will be rebuilt with streets and a trench, but in times of trouble. 26 After the sixty-two ‘sevens,’ the Anointed One will be cut off and will have nothing. The people of the ruler who will come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end will come like a flood: War will continue until the end, and desolations have been decreed.  NIV

Neh 2:7-9   7  I also said to him, “If it pleases the king, may I have letters to the governors of Trans-Euphrates, so that they will provide me safe-conduct until I arrive in Judah? 8 And may I have a letter to Asaph, keeper of the king’s forest, so he will give me timber to make beams for the gates of the citadel by the temple and for the city wall and for the residence I will occupy?” And because the gracious hand of my God was upon me, the king granted my requests. 9 So I went to the governors of Trans-Euphrates and gave them the king’s letters. The king had also sent army officers and cavalry with me.  NIV

Journey to the Cross

We are sorry that we haven’t been able to update the blog with new sermons since Feb. 25th.  We have had problems with malware in the blog that locked us out.  Then we have been having ongoing problems with recording the sermon.  We believe we have these issues resolved, for now.

We are currently having our website and blog completely rewritten to hopefully solve all of these issues permanently.  I will send out a blog post when the new website is ready to go online.  With the new website the blog will be an integral part of the website.

Journey to the Cross  John 1:40-11:53

We are going to take the next three sermons to look at the significance of the events that led to the cross.

Supplemental Scriptures

Heb 12:2   2 Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Mal 4:5    5 “See, I will send you the prophet Elijah before that great and dreadful day of the Lord comes.  NIV

Matt 11:14   14 And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come.  NIV

Matt 17:11-13   11 Jesus replied, “To be sure, Elijah comes and will restore all things. 12 But I tell you, Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but have done to him everything they wished. In the same way the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands.” NIV

Luke 1:16-17   16 Many of the people of Israel will he bring back to the Lord their God. 17 And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous — to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”  NIV

Heb 12:2-4    2 Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.  4 In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.  NIV

Redeemed  Gal 3:15-18

Paul reveals Abraham was given the covenant of righteousness through faith long before the Law existed.  Therefore the covenant of faith predates the covenant of the Law.

Supplemental Scriptures

Gen 6:17-18   17 I am going to bring floodwaters on the earth to destroy all life under the heavens, every creature that has the breath of life in it. Everything on earth will perish. 18 But I will establish my covenant with you, and you will enter the ark — you and your sons and your wife and your sons’ wives with you. NIV

Gen 9:11   11 I establish my covenant with you: Never again will all life be cut off by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth.” NIV

Gen 12:3   3 I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.”  NIV

Gal 3:14   14 He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.  NIV

Heb 11:13  13 All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance. And they admitted that they were aliens and strangers on earth.  NIV

Heb 9:15   15 For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance — now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant.  NIV
