Evil Versus Truth  Cor. 13:4-7

We continue to study a comprehensive definition of love.  Paul explains to us that love never delights in evil but always rejoices with truth.

Supplemental Scriptures

Gal 6:1                                                                                                          1 Brothers, if someone is caught in a sin, you who are spiritual should restore him gently. But watch yourself, or you also may be tempted. NIV

Heb. 4:12                                                                  12 For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. NIV

2 John 9-11                                                                                             9 Anyone who runs ahead and does not continue in the teaching of Christ does not have God; whoever continues in the teaching has both the Father and the Son. 10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not take him into your house or welcome him. 11 Anyone who welcomes him shares in his wicked work. Anger and the List.   Cor. 13:4-7

We continue to study a comprehensive definition of love.  Today we take an in-depth look at anger and not keeping a record of wrongs done to us.

Supplemental Scriptures

Matt. 21:12-13                                                                                        12  Jesus entered the temple area and drove out all who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves. 13 “It is written,” he said to them, “‘My house will be called a house of prayer,’ but you are making it a ‘den of robbers.'” NIV

Matt. 11-12                                                               11 Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.  NIV

Matt 18:15                                                                                               15 “If your brother sins against you, go and show him his fault, just between the two of you. If he listens to you, you have won your brother over. NIV

Butlers for God

Are You Rude? Cor. 13:4-7

We continue to study a comprehensive definition of love.  Love is not self-seeking  for this is the opposite of God’s definition of love:  put the needs of others before your own.

Supplemental Scriptures

Gen. 3:4-5
4 “You will not surely die,” the serpent said to the woman. 5 “For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” NIV

Matt. 20:25-28
25 Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 26 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 27 and whoever wants to be first must be your slave— 28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” NIV

Phil 2:4
4 Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. NIV

1 Thess 5:16-18
16 Be joyful always; 17 pray continually; 18 give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. NIV

Are You Rude?

Are You Rude? Cor. 13:4-7

We continue to study a comprehensive definition of love.  Rudeness has become an accepted and expected part of our culture.  We need to be very careful not to allow it to enter our lives or the life of our church.

Supplemental Scriptures

Luke 7:36-48   Now one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to have dinner with him, so he went to the Pharisee’s house and reclined at the table. 37 When a woman who had lived a sinful life in that town learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee’s house, she brought an alabaster jar of perfume, 38 and as she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them.
39 When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is — that she is a sinner.”
40 Jesus answered him, “Simon, I have something to tell you.”
“Tell me, teacher,” he said.
41 “Two men owed money to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. 42 Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he canceled the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?” 43 Simon replied, “I suppose the one who had the bigger debt canceled.”
“You have judged correctly,” Jesus said.
44 Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45 You did not give me a kiss, but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet. 46 You did not put oil on my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet. 47 Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven — for she loved much. But he who has been forgiven little loves little.”
48 Then Jesus said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.” NIV

Eph. 4:29  29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. NIV

Proud of our Boasting
1 Cor. 13:4-7

We continue to study a comprehensive definition of love.  Today we find that love is not proud nor does it boast.

I received a suggestion that I include the supplemental Scriptures used during the sermon in the blog.  It is a great idea so from now on you will find this new section:

Supplemental Scriptures

Eph 4:29    29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. NIV

1 Cor 4:7    7 For who makes you different from anyone else? What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as though you did not? NIV

Rom 12:3   3 For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the measure of faith God has given you. NIV

Eph 2:10   10 For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. NIV

Rom 12:1-2   12 Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God — this is your spiritual act of worship. 2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is — his good, pleasing and perfect will. NIV
